DEL MAR, CA (January 6, 2016) – The San Diego County Fair, presented by Albertsons/Vons, once again reigns as a Fair industry power house across the nation and the world. During two autonomous occasions, the 2015 Fair was honored with a bounty of awards from two renowned institutes, The International Association of Fairs and Expositions (IAFE) and The Western Fairs Association (WFA).

Representing 3,200 fairs throughout the world, the IAFE Convention and Trade Show was held November 29 – December 2, 2015, in Las Vegas, Nevada. The San Diego County Fair/22nd DAA was awarded 23 honors in several categories highlighting and emphasizing outstanding Agricultural and Competitive programs.

At the WFA Convention and Trade Show held January 3-6 in Anaheim, California, the San Diego County Fair received a total of 32 awards in various categories including: Marketing and Agriculture/Educational Programs, the Fair Theme and NEW Programs such as, Community Outreach, Conservation, Children’s and Agricultural Education. Also celebrated during a special awards ceremony, General Manager and CEO Timothy J. Fennell was inducted into the Western Fairs Association (WFA) Hall of Fame.

The WFA Hall of Fame award is presented annually to individuals whose dedicated efforts have enriched the tradition of fairs and encouraged the professionalism of the Fair industry. "I am humbled and honored to have received this very special award and to join the ranks of the esteemed list of WFA Hall of Fame inductees. Being a part of the Fair industry is not a job, it’s a way of life for all who are involved. Like a family, we help and support each other, all the while staying true to ourselves and for me, staying true to the Mission Statement of the 22nd District Agricultural Association,” stated Mr. Fennell.

Mr. Fennell has served as the CEO/General Manager for the 22nd District Agricultural Association since March 1, 1993. The 22nd DAA is responsible for managing the Del Mar Fairgrounds, a 350-acre multi-use entertainment, exhibit and horse racing facility, as well as the Del Mar Horsepark, a 64-acre equestrian facility. The Del Mar Fairgrounds is host to over 300 events annually, employees up to 5,000 people and has a $475 million dollar economic impact on the local economy. During Mr. Fennell’s tenure at the Del Mar Fairgrounds, he implemented a business plan that enabled the Fairgrounds to become entirely self-funded using NO TAX DOLLARS.

Representing the 22nd District Agricultural Association Board of Directors, President Frederick Schenk stated, “The board of directors is very proud of Mr. Fennell’s achievements and recognition, and of his receiving this incredibly prestigious award. Tim is a dedicated CEO whose outstanding service over many decades has achieved tremendous success for the 22nd DAA. His never-ending commitment and foresight has been an important asset to the Del Mar Fairgrounds and citizens of San Diego County,” added Schenk.

The 22nd DAA Board oversees all activities at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. Mr. Schenk was first appointed to the 22nd District Agricultural Association board of directors by Governor Gray Davis in 2002, where he served for three years. In 2011 he was again appointed to the board by California Governor Jerry Brown, who recently re-appointed him to another four-year term on the board. In October of 2013, Mr. Schenk was elected as President of the22nd DAA Board of Directors.
