DEL MAR, Ca. (Sept. 1, 2017) – Teachers are invited to celebrate local agriculture and discover how to make learning come alive in their gardens and classrooms at a free Teacher Resource Fair from 4-6 p.m. Oct. 12 at the Del Mar Fairgrounds.

The event, nicknamed the Food and Flower Happy Hour, raises awareness among K-12 educators about the strength and diversity of San Diego County’s agriculture and horticulture community, and its contributions to the county. Teachers will learn about a variety of resources that are available for garden-based learning from approximately 25 groups who will offer agricultural and health-inspired services and program information. They’ll also be treated to free plants, flowers, appetizers and giveaways. The event is hosted by San Diego County Ag in the Classroom (SDAITC), a non-profit organization dedicated to providing teachers with the tools they need to build awareness and appreciation of agriculture, and even inspire youth to be part of a new farming generation.

“Agriculture in San Diego County is a labor of passion and creativity,” said Diana Bergman of San Diego County Ag in the Classroom. “With water and land at a premium, we have the most resourceful farmers in the nation who coax lush flowers, succulents, fruits and vegetables to grow from our dry landscape. San Diego County also has more small farms and woman-owned farms than any other county in the nation.”

By meeting local farmers and growers, event organizers hope to spread the word to teachers that agriculture is an economic engine in the county, a viable career option for youth and a critical and accessible provider of food for our communities.
