Horsepower abounds at Del Mar National Horse Show - tickets and prize lists available now

DEL MAR, Calif. (March 6, 2018) – Steeped in tradition and a rich history of showcasing some of the most exciting and prestigious world-class equestrian competitions in the United States – the 73rd Del Mar National Horse Show is gearing up for its best show yet April 17-May 6 at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. The iconic three-week event brings together many of the most accomplished, athletic and revered horse and rider teams to compete for coveted trophies.

Much of the Del Mar National Horse Show is free for spectators to come and watch nearly every day of the three-week run. The featured Saturday evening events require a paid admission, and tickets are now available for both reserved seating and gourmet dinner VIP boxes online at delmarnational.com. Entry materials and complete prize lists for competitors are also available now online.

Each week of the Del Mar National represents a distinct discipline – Western (April 17-21), Dressage (April 26-29) and Hunter/Jumper (May 1-6) – and closes with a special event highlighting that segment on Saturday evenings. Nearly 1,500 horses from various countries will compete in the three-week show for more than $300,000 in cash and prizes.

WEEKLY HIGHLIGHTS:

WESTERN WEEK, April 17-21

You’ll find traditional Western riding techniques such as trail skills and reining during Western Week. New this year is “Ranch Day” on April 17, featuring ranch riding and the Highpoint Horse Award. Classes for the American Quarter Horse Association, the National Snaffle Bit Association, the National Reining Horse Association and the Pacific Coast Horse Show Association are featured along with Circuit and Highpoint Awards. Traditional perpetual trophies, dating back to the 1960s, are awarded to the winners, making the Del Mar National Horse Show unique to most shows.

“Night of the Horse,” presented by Mary’s Tack & Feed at 7 p.m. April 21 is the exclamation point of Western Week where spectators will be dazzled with daring feats during a truly unique musical equestrian theatrical performance. Globe-trotting Australian horseman Dan James will be the highlight of the show - he’s the only cowboy in the country who Roman Rides a liberty team comprised of four horses and a pony. Dan has wowed audiences throughout North America, Australia, and Japan as he pushes the limits of horsemanship and entertainment.

DRESSAGE WEEK, April 26-29

Dressage Week brings the CDI-W International Dressage Competition and classes for amateurs and juniors. The Del Mar National dressage competition continues to be one of the most highly-regarded dressage event in the U.S. and attracts many of the world’s finest horses and riders. Top horse and rider combinations vie for prize money, United States Equestrian Federation national qualifying recognition and International Federation for Equestrian Sports’ world ranking. 

“The Evening of Musical Freestyles” at 7 p.m. April 28, is Dressage Week’s highlight event, set to music. Olympic and world champion horse and rider pairs will wow the crowd with a show considered to be “ballet on horseback.” It is a World Cup qualifying event, showcasing a presentation of strength and elegance between the rider and horse. 

HUNTER/JUMPER WEEK, May 1-6

Hunter/Jumper Week offers a breadth of classes for both disciplines, including the prestigious North American Junior Young Rider Championship Selection Trial, a leading competition under International Federation for Equestrian Sports rules, allowing top young riders to test their skills against other top juniors.

The $25,000 Surfside Grand Prix presented by Competitive Equestrian at 1:45 p.m. May 4 will host as many as 75 horse and rider duos who will compete for the chance to ride in the $100,000 Grand Prix of Del Mar presented by Pacific Sotheby’s International Realty Equestrian Division at 6:45 p.m. May 5. Filled with exciting speed and agility, the Grand Prix will entertain a standing-room-only crowd of enthusiastic fans cheering on their favorite athletes. The finest horses and riders in the world always rise to the occasion and thrill spectators with the best the sport has to offer in this event.

Spectators of the three weeks of the Del Mar National don’t need to be well-versed in the equestrian world to thoroughly enjoy the horse show. What’s more, for the first time, the Del Mar National Horse Show will feature an interactive exhibit called USEF Meet the Breeds Expo presented by MD Barnmaster to delight kids and families with hands-on opportunities to experience the exciting world of horses at our three signature Saturday evening performances. Whether you grew up in the equestrian arena or have simply dreamed about owning or riding a horse, the Meet the Breeds Expo offers a fun chance to sit in different types of saddles, get an up-close and personal view of different breeds of horses and even take selfies with your favorite four-legged show-stoppers.
