New sensory stations to provide relaxation oasis from sights and sounds of the Fair

Released: May 24, 2018

DEL MAR, Calif. (May 24, 2018) – The momentum of the Fair’s bright lights, sounds and countless exciting activities can sometimes build to an overwhelming crescendo for children and adults with autism, PTSD and other sensory-sensitive conditions.

That’s why the San Diego County Fair has partnered with KultureCity, whose Sensory Inclusion program has been successfully implemented in various public venues across the United States including the NFL and NBA. This is KultureCity’s first partnership with a fair in the US.

Sensory stations provide safe spaces for guests with sensory needs to de-escalate, as well as low-key sensory input activities that are calming. The main sensory station location at the San Diego County Fair is located at Guest Services. The satellite station is in the Creative Youth tent in Family Funville.

In addition, Guest Services will offer free sensory toolkits that can be used while out and about at the Fair. The kits include noise-cancelling headphones, fidgets, weighted lap pads and other helpful tools.

“Providing quiet places to retreat from the Fair, as well as tools to allow people with sensory-sensitive conditions to participate in stimulating Fair activities, is a gateway to ensuring that everyone can enjoy their Fair experience,” said Katie Mueller, deputy general manager of the San Diego County Fair. “We’re thrilled to partner with KultureCity in this exciting program that will enrich so many people’s experiences at the Fair.”
