Del Mar Fairgrounds OTB’s Jose Arias Wins $750,000!
DEL MAR, CA (January 31, 2014 ) — Surfside Race Place, one of the nation’s largest and most prestigious off-track-betting facilities is also home - base to the 2014 Handicapper of the year! Jose Arias, a frequent guest at Surfside, took hold of the lead from the first day of the three day contest held in Las Vegas, Nevada the weekend of January 24 – 26. Arias topped a field of 500 to win the $750,000 first-place prize and an Eclipse Award as Handicapper of the Year, at the 15th annual Daily Racing Form/NTRA National Handicapping Championship (NHC) presented by Racetrack Television Network, Sovereign Stable and Treasure Island Las Vegas.
In its 15th year, the Daily Racing Form/NTRA National Handicapping Championship is the most important tournament of the year for horseplayers. There are no “buy-in” entries at the NHC. It is the culmination of a year-long series of NTRA-sanctioned local tournaments conducted by racetracks, casino racebooks, off-track betting facilities and horse racing and handicapping websites, each of which sends its top qualifiers to the national finals, one of which is Surfside Race Place at Del Mar. Four qualifying Tournaments were held at Surfside in 2013. Contestants traveled from all over the nation to Surfside to test their handicapping skills in these popular two-day, live money tournaments. From these Tournaments, 15 handicappers qualified (some with two entries) and represented Team Surfside in Las Vegas competing in the NHC on January 24-26, 2014.
Surfside has offered NHC qualifying Tournaments for 15 years and has become the top choice facility for many on the circuit. Up for grabs at Surfside in 2014 are 18 guaranteed NHC spots! The qualifying tournament dates have been released for this year including 9 chances to qualify. April 11-13, July 11-13, and December 26-28. Each Tournament is a one-day live money event.
To top it all off, Surfside tournament player, Brent Sumja won the NTRA Tour, leading up to the NHC, winning 3 tournaments at Surfside which helped his point totals. The grand prize was $75,000 plus an eligibility for a $2 million bonus if he had won the NHC, additionally he won $90,000 on the Tour itself.
